Structural R&D Engineer
Website Alteon Energy
Building airplanes that fly for ~417 days.
About Alteon
The Wright Brothers gave humanity flight, Alteon exists to give humanity (almost) perpetual
flight. Our mission is to build the world’s highest endurance aircrafts – ones that can fly for
up to ~417 days at a time.
We are a small, young team driven by pushing the limits of what’s possible – we don’t like
settling for good enough. We are here to build the best technology possible, the best
airplane possible, to do the best engineering possible. Limited only by the laws of physics.
About this role
As a structural R&D engineer, you will own the structural integrity of the aircrafts that can fly
for 100s of days without any servicing or maintenance. You will design the structural
architecture from the ground up – playing a role in designing every joint, every fastener,
every rib & spar. You should love to solve difficult problems, think from first principles and
thrive in fast moving environments where there is no playbook.
What you’ll do
– Design the rib and spar layout, reinforcements, joints, and fasteners that make up the
airframe.
– Decide how the airplane comes apart and goes back together — wing splits,
wing-to-fuselage joins, removable sections, hard points.
– Design and run the experiments that validate joint, bond, or structure trials.
– Work with production, flight testing, and composite teams to take an idea from sketch
to production-ready.
Skills & competencies
– You have spent time building & flying fixed-wing aircrafts, and have a first-principles
understanding of the loads an aircraft experiences.
– You have run FEA and validated it.
– You are proficient with CAD software (Fusion 360, Solidworks, etc)
– You have a working knowledge of how composite structures behave (ideally, you
have built a few composite parts yourself)
